In fact, findings reveal that children from the age of 5 spend an average of 6.5 hours behind a screen each day.
Gone are the days when kids would spend all day playing outside, unknowingly building stamina, releasing endorphins and casually absorbing vitamin D. Back then the only screen parents needed to worry about was sunscreen, whereas today’s kids seem to have a different issue with bright sunshine – it interferes with the visibility of their screens.
While it is important for kids to be tech-savvy in this day and age, it’s equally important for them to be well-rounded in their skills. Increasing your child’s physical activity can result in better concentration levels, lower levels of depression and higher self-esteem. Dr. Lindenberg, a San Diego based paediatrician advised that “Children must be given the skills to entertain themselves without electronics, and must be given the opportunity to interact with others. These are basic life skills that will remain important no matter how widespread electronics become.”
